RE: [New proposal] Snøland
If our new player is okay with that. My thoughts would be that Aedeland would be inclined to annex those territories if they were culturally that similar to it. Here is a rather left field suggestion for our new player. He could make his people Loura. I found who they are inspired by I think:

The Chukchi of Eastern Siberia refer to themselves as the Luorawetlan!

They would be no more cultural different/same as Aedeland is from Vittmark. Language isn't everything. I think people in Vittmark/Aedeland/Cykeria (maybe even Helreich and URP) could understand each other enough to get the idea of what the other is saying. Also, Snøland's society is very different than Aedeland's. Aedeland is kinda tribal or clannish but not nomadic. The Aedelish would not want anything to do with Snøland's welfare state and perhaps most importantly they don't share the same religion.

I agree there would probably be an Aedelish speaking population in the big cities but I'm cool with whatever language Tom wants to go with. As I said, Cykeria's remote populations speak a yet-to-be-defined PIE language.

Jeff's explanation of the differences between Snöland - Aedeland - Vittmark is very clear. Having some "scandinavian" being used as lingua franca, due to trade relations (Skara Samverkan, Greater Stoldavic Empire, Aedeland), still could imply major differences in ethnicity, religion and culture. I'm pretty sure the Snölanders and Cykerians have ethnical bonds. And developing a Snölandish flavor of Orkanan seems possible here as well.

If that's the case then I'd still like to go with a Finnish/Lappish inspired language, with a presence of Aedelish in the big cities and among international/trading companies.

Alternatively, I could settle for my own bastardization of Norwegian & Aedelish.

It make sense in the region and setting that you should have Finnish or a similar language if you want it. If players can potentially be allowed to create conlangs in game then that particular group of languages in an sub arctic environment should be fine.

RE: [New proposal] Snøland
Excuse me for partypooping, but it makes no sense that if the map says "norwegian" to use "finnish" there, especially since it has been designated to a different location. Those languages, religions, ethnic groups, resources have been distributed this way as a starting point for development of a nation, if we can just mix and match then we can easily throw out all the maps in the atlas.

I am not yelling at Tom, let me assure that. I like new ideas and new proposals, discussing them and making progress. I am yelling at some people that have been around for years, some of them right from the start, who now say "do as you like". I don't get that, I really don't.

If everybody else is fine with this I'll just sit back and let it happen, but I at least wanted to have marked this particular occassion where we threw out the entire atlas as a team of geofictionists. OK I'm going to get some coffee now, it seems that I need it.

RE: [New proposal] Snøland
I agree with Pep. The languages map, as flawed as it is, shouldn't be ignored in this way.

If Finnish wasn't used on the map, I wouldn't see a major issue in using it there. But as Pep says Finnish is already used elsewhere and would cause major issues with trying to rejig the entire world atlas - that shouldn't happen.
