Anaria is a continent located mostly in the northern hemisphere, separated from all other land masses by the sea. It is bordered by the Sinian Sea to the north-west, by the North Sea to the north-east, by the Stolvic Ocean and Settant Sea to the east, by the Viverian Sea to the south, and the Ovestan Sea to the west. Anaria covers 19,449,631 km² (7,509,545 sq mi) and is by far the most populous continent on Gotha, with over 920 million people, approximately 34% of the world's population.

The continent is divided into numerous subcontinents and regions, the largest and most important being Adhem, Anaria Major, Anaria Minor, Stoldavia, and Thultannia. At the western-most point of the continent, the Straits of Afti separate Anaria from the continent of Tharna; at the northern-most point, Anaria is separated from Jorveh by the Straits of Andlat; and at the southern-most point, by the Simal Strait to Tzeraka. Due to the continent's position, Anarian geography and climate are hugely varied. The northern half of the continent is largely temperate, varying from harsh winter conditions in Stoldavia to hot summers around the Medio Sea, while the south, particularly Adhem is tropical and sub-tropical, with the equator running through northern Adhem.

Anaria is home to some of the most powerful states on Gotha, many of them retaining large overseas colonial empires that dominate much of the rest of the planet. The so-called 'Anarian Great Powers' are a loose categorisation of the most powerful of these states, who exert considerable influence and power within Anaria and around Gotha. Anaria has the largest economy of any continent, with over 59.3% of the world's total GDP, and has most of the highest GDP per capita states in the world.

Anaria has been home to some of the most ancient and influential cultures in Gotha, with the Medio Sea, Anaria Major, and Stoldavia all hosting numerous empires and civilisations that have had a profound effect on religion, culture, politics, society, and history. Amongst the most significant Anarian civilisations are the Auresian Empire, the Dragar Monopoly, the Greater Stoldavic Empire, the Orkanan Realm of Stoldavia, and the Parnethian Empire. Anaria was also the birthplace of many of the worlds main religions, including: Dlroch'veldr, The Faith, Orkanan, and Sadarisnism. Today, with many Anarian nations controlling large colonial empires, Anarian cultures, languages, customs, art, literature, religions, science, and technology are hugely influential throughout Gotha.

Map of Anaria

A map showing the known nations of Anaria.

The name 'Anaria' is generally agreed to have derived from the Old Achtlic word annarr, which means 'the other one' or 'the other place'. This has been attributed to various ancient societies on the island of Stoldavia, in the far north of the continent, which rendered the vast continental landmass to their south as 'the other place.' The name furthermore reflects the ancient and enduring sense of separation and distinction between Stoldavians and the 'Anarians' who live on Anaria Major. The name Anaria has nevertheless come into common usage throughout many Anarian languages to describe the whole continent, including Stoldavia and Thultannia.

Some linguistsa have argued against this etymology, favouring a derivation from the Ancient Parnethi verb ἀναρρέω (anarreo), meaning to flow back or to the source, which some have argued describes the Larissos River in Anaria Minor. This etymological theory, however, is far less accepted than the Old Achtlic theory, which enjoys the majority of academic endorsements.

See also: History of Anaria and Pan-Anarian War

The first half of the 76th century was dominated by the great Pan-Anarian War, which saw fighting throughout the continent and beyond, lasting from 7498 to 7552. The war started when Willem II of Auresia ordered the blockade of all Hellish ships passing through the critical Hattaro Straits, which precipitated a declaration of war by Helreich. A great many Anarian nations were pulled into the war, and with the existing alliance structures in place, the war quickly turned into a world war. The war was fought between the Aschgæt Alliance (initially made up of Aedeland, Amberia, Anisora, Auresia, and later Halland, Penryn, and Ådalen) and the United League (Anat Tahan, Errea, Helreich, Mörenburg, New Stoldavia and New Südentor). Estimates for civilian and military casualties throughout the fifty-year long war range from 110 to 170 million, making it the most destructive war in history.

During the course of the war many fronts opened up which saw extensive fighting on land, at sea, and in the air. The principal theatres and fronts were: the Auresian front, where Hellish forces invaded with overwhelming force at the beginning of the war and saw some of the most fierce fighting until the Hellish withdrawal in 7529; the Western Front (also known as the Tahani Front, the Anisoran Front, or the Anaria Minor Front), which saw the forces of Anat Tahan fighting those of the Anisoran Empire and the allies; the Medio Sea, the Stolvic Ocean, as well as other important bodies of water, including The Soll, the Aeylish Sea and the Sinian Sea, where extensive naval campaigns saw blockades, counter-blockades, and pitched battles rage for much of the war.

A number of other conflicts are often included within the overarching period of the Pan-Anarian War. These include: the Becuvitatian Civil War (7520-7524); the Second Penrish Civil War (7527-7543); and the Häverist-Wolgos War (7544-7548), which led to the evacuation of the Wolgos from Anaria.

The war eventually ended in a truce, with the signing of the Treaty of X in 7552. The geopolitical landscape of Anaria after the Pan-Anarian War had changed drastically since the outbreak of War, with many national borders redrawn, new nations created, and forms of government abolished, replaced, or brought down by revolution. The immediate post-War period was a time of great instability, with many nations fighting civil wars and other internal conflicts. These conflicts include: the Three Way Conflicts (7552-7564), which eventually led to an Anarian peacekeeping mission and the establishment of the Federative Kingdom of Vittmark; the War of Istanian Unification, ending in 7555 with the establishment of the United Republic of Istania; the Consolidationist Crisis (7552-7553) in Auresia; and the Amberian Civil War (7554-7559), which established the Republic United of Amberia and Eilän, among others.

Geography and extent

Anaria Major

Main article: Anaria Major
The Ferric Mountains are the largest and highest mountain range in Anaria Major.
The Baiona River, a tributary of the great River Axiom, in the Ferric Massif, Anaria Major.

Anaria Major is the largest sub-continent in Anaria and forms the central landmass of the continent. The subcontinent is bordered on the north-west by the Isthmus of Odobeşti and the western foothills of the Lespezi Mountains in Becuvitatia, and the South Medio Sea; in the north by the Eastern Medio Sea, the Hattaro Straits, the Soll, the Aeylish Sea (all of which define the southern extent of the subcontinent of Thultannia); in the north-east by the Cheltic Isles (Amberia), and the Errea Sea; in the east by the Settant Sea and the enclosed Argirrun Istasho; in the south by the Waski Isthmus south of the Swalny Massif; and in the west by the Velikidom Coast and the Ovestan Sea.

Due to its large geographic spread across numerous lines of latitude, the geography and climate of Anaria Minor is the most varied on the whole continent of Anaria. The north of the subcontinent is dominated by large grasslands and widespread savannahs on the Cadrai Peninsula, northern Varennes and much of the Errea Plains in Errea, and are the driest sub-mountainous areas of the whole continent (with much of the Cadrai Peninsula in the Medio Sea experiencing less than 85cm of rainfall per year). Moving south, the central region is dominated by temperate forests and the vast mountain ranges that surround the Axiom Basin and the northern Veselyv Plains: the Mur and the Lespezi Mountains in the west; the Nixian Mountains in the north in central Auresia; and the mighty Ferric Mountains that run through the heart of the subcontinent along the borders between Errea, Hradista-Bojov, and Atregona in the east. The Ferrics are the largest mountain range in Anaria Major and the second largest in Anaria, after the Rand Mountains in Stoldavia. South of the Ferric Mountains, much of the coastal areas of Anaria Major to the east and west feature tropical forests with a much higher average rainfall. The central Veselyv Plains in particular, which dominates South Anaria Major, features thick tropical forests with an average rainfall of over 160cm a year. In the east the enclosed sea Argirrun Istasho bridges East Anaria Major with north-eastern Adhem via the Ekhijal Islands of Atregona. In the far south of the subcontinent, the Swalny Massif mountains mark the southern extent of Anaria Major as the foothills spread into the Waski Isthmus.

At present there are eight nations located in Anaria Major, either partially or entirely: Atregona, Auresia,1 Errea, Hradista-Bojov, Istania, and Varennes. In addition, Becuvitatia straddles the border between Anaria Major in the east and Anaria Minor in the west on the Isthmus of Odobeşti; and three constituent states of the Anisoran Empire are located in Anaria Major, the Grand Principality of Pastana and the Principality of Valbiano on the Cadrai Peninsula and the Principality of Melloria in the South Medio Sea, although the majority of the Empire is located in Anaria Minor.

Anaria Minor

Main article: Anaria Minor

The subcontinent of Anaria Minor is located in the north-west of Anaria and is joined to Anaria Major in the subcontinent's south-east by the narrowest point of the Isthmus of Odobeşti, between the Ovestan Sea and the Sea of Viorica (Medio Sea). Anaria Minor is bordered on the west by the Straits of Afti, the Chanos Sea, and the Achil Sound, all of which surround the Teratogyneka peninsula; in the north-west by the Sinian Sea, and includes the island of Achilleio, the largest island in the subcontinent; in the north by the Western Strait which also marks the southern extent of West Thultannia; in the east by the West Medio Sea along the Merigno and Tova coast, leading down to the South Medio Sea and the Isthmus of Odobeşti at the south-east; in the south by the Calid Coast and Ovestan Sea proper. The islands of Mandruleania are also classed as belonging to Anaria Minor, despite being several hundred miles out in the Ovestan Sea.

Colombara Bay on the Tovan Medio coast, Anaria Minor.

The geography of Anaria Minor is largely temperate, with fertile plains and grasslands occupying much of the landmass. The eastern coast by the Medio Sea, particularity in parts of Tova and Lusava, are the driest areas of Anaria Minor, with the Pequinello Islands and the surrounding coastline being some of the driest areas in the whole of Anaria. Large swathes of central and southern Anaria Minor are dominated by extensive hills and mountain ranges, the largest of which being the Bhazen Mountains which forms the backbone of the subcontinent. East of the Bhazen Range is the Makur Valley, a fertile area following the Makur River. Two lakes form in the middle of the Valley, Lake Karamon and Lake Parrona, and are respectively the two largest lakes in Anaria. The southern coast experiences the highest temperatures and highest average rainfall, with a thin strip of tropical forest hugging the coastline.

There are currently three sovereign states, one dominion client state and a protecorate located in Anaria Minor: Achilleio, a client island state of the Aldsegian Empire; the largest state in Anaria Minor, the Anisoran Empire2; Becuvitatia, which lies at the extreme south-east of the subcontinent and bridges the gap between Anaria Minor and Anaria Major; the Tahani province of East Gadavides, with the vast majority of Tahani territory located across the Straits of Afti in Tharna; and Tavonia, a protectorate of the Anisoran Empire.

Main article: Adhem
Podratvine tropical forest on the Ashten Peninsula, Adhem, on the equator.

Adhem is the southern most landmass in Anaria, is surrounded on almost all sides by water and adjoins Anaria Major by a narrow isthmus in the north-west of the subcontinent. The Waski Isthmus forms the bridge with Anaria Major at its narrowest point west of the Badzkrolow Sound in the north-west. In the north, Adhem is bordered by the Argirrun Istasho Sea; in the north-east the Ashten Peninsula extends out into the Settant Sea and meets the Ekhijal Islands of Atregona, which forms an island chain bridge with eastern Anaria Major in the north; to the east Adhem is bordered by the South Settant Sea; in the south by the Viverian Sea and the Simal Strait, the latter of which marks the southern tip of Anaria and faces the Kenget Islands and the continent of Tzeraka proper. And finally in the west, Adhem is bordered by the Ovestan Sea.

The geography of Adhem is characterised by its widespread tropical forests, high average rainfall and lush coastal regions. The equator runs through the north of Adhem, running north of the Tulenie Gulf in the west of the subcontinent and the Tevin Mountains that dominate the central lands. The east coast of Adhem, in particular, experiences the highest temperatures (with the north-east Ashten Peninsula averaging 34 degrees celsius), as well as the highest average rainfall (over 205cm), making it the wettest, the most humid, and the most lusciously fertile region in Anaria.

There are currently XXX nations located in Adhem.

Cheltic Isles

Main article: Cheltic Isles
The rolling hills of southern Alaria, Amberia, the Cheltic Isles.

The Cheltic Isles are an island chain situated between three Anarian subcontinents: Thultannia to the west, Stoldavia to the north and east, and Anaria Major to the south. The islands are surrounded by the Aeylish Sea in the west, the Calcit Channel in the north, the Straits of the Three Sisters to the east and the Settant Sea (Stolvic Ocean), and finally the Madheshtor Channel in the south. There are three main islands that make up the Cheltic Isles, alongside hundreds of other smaller islands. The largest island is Great Amberia at 231,284 km², followed by Alaria at 53,734 km², and finally Elshavn at 23,986 km². The entire island chain makes up the homelands of Amberia and the Cheltai people.

The geography of the Cheltic Isles is characterised by its close proximity to a major fault-line, which some geologists have posited as the location of the Anarian and Stoldavian tectonic plates. As such, the landscape is very rocky and suffers from frequent earthquakes, especially in Alaria and Elshavn. On Great Amberia the Nibelhorn mountain range is the most dramatic landscape on the Cheltic Isles. Beyond the major hill and mountain regions, small forests and grasslands occupy the majority of the islands, with savannah grasslands in southern Great Amberia and Alaria. The average yearly temperatures in the Cheltic Isles can range between 13 and 20 degrees celsius, with the higher temperatures further south. The Isles tend to see less than 115cm of rainfall a year. Great Amberia is the most densely populated island in the world, and as such much of the countryside has been subsumed by urban settlements or turned over to large scale industrial operations.

Nesterian Isles

Main article: Nesterian Isles
Forested highlands in northern Nester Major.

The Nesterian Isles are a group of islands in the east of Anaria, extending south-east from Stoldavia into the Stolvic Ocean. There are two principle islands, Nester Major (at 631,207 km²) and Nestor Minor (at 54,002 km²), the latter of which marks the most eastern point of the continent of Anaria. In the north-west, Nester Major is separated from the subcontinent of Stoldavia by the Straits of Stelneck. In the north, Nester Major lies due south of Rissland, separated by the Stormy Sea. East is the Stolvic Ocean proper, and to the south the Twin Channel separates Nester Major in the north from Nester Minor. To the west lies the Settant Sea and Anaria Major beyond that.

The islands themselves are mostly covered in temperate forests and grassland, with the Stachel Highlands, Central Highlands, and Lower Nester Highlands occupying much of the northern and eastern spine of Nester Major, surrounding the alpine environment of the Rückgrat Mountains. Nester Minor and much of southern Nester Major experience average yearly temperatures of between 13-17 degrees Celsius, with an average yearly rainfall of between 115-135cm. Nester Major is one of the most populated islands in Gotha and the southern coast of the island, in particular, is amongst the most densely populated regions of Anaria.

Current nations located on the Nesterian Isles include: Stachelort.

Main article: Stoldavia
Location of Stoldavia on the northern fringe of Anaria
Stoldavia is a large island in north-eastern Anaria, often considered to be a subcontinent on its own. Its area measures about 2,445,000 km² and it is home to some 126 million people. The name is mainly connected to the two empires that covered as good as the entire island: the Orkanan Realm and the Greater Stoldavic Empire. As the cradle of the Orkanan religion, Stoldavia can be seen as one of the pillars of civilization on Gotha.
A Fjord in Skoldaland the far north west of Stoldavia in Aedeland.

The name Stoldavia has been in use for about 20 centuries by mainland Anarians. The name got in use with the rise of the Orkanan Realm which got the addition "of Stoldavia". This actually is a corruption of the Realm's capital Skiöldavik, where the /ɧ/ sound got replaced by /st/. Skiöldavik means Bay of Shields, which means that the entire island is named after one of its northern bays.

The central mountain ranges, with peaks raising as high as 5000 metres above sea level, create clearly distinct subregions. From the Blue Mountains (Blååsarna in Vittmark, Blaubergen in Mörenburg) a northern range called Yetteos (Iätteås in Vittmark) and a southern range called Rand Mountains (Randbergen in Mörenburg and Helreich) stretch towards the east. The region north of the Blue Mountains and Yetteos is more rugged and cold due to the presence of the cold stream along that coastline. The western region is dominated by the valley of the mighty Talpe River with the Lower Stoldavian Range as central feature. The area has a highly varied topography: fertile steppe in the north, high plateaus and rugged, undeveloped mountain ranges at its center, deep valleys and rugged coasts in the west, and a few but fertile plains along the narrow southern coast. The southeastern part is shaped by the Reik River and several large peninsulas. The high valleys of Reikland in Mörenburg and Vittmark are almost completely surrounded by high mountain ranges. The lower region in Helreich is dominated by lush green fields and forests.

Apart from the Aedelsmen in the west, Stoldavia is mainly populated by an ethnic group known as the Dölmer. The main religion on the island is Orkanan, but over the last centuries large differences between the main branches of Stellism, The Faith and Mellanhand have occurred. Linguistically, the highly related Achlt languages have gained foothold outside the island as well, for example in Amberia and Halland.

Stoldavia is home to the nations of Aedeland, Helreich, Mörenburg, the United Royal Provinces, and Vittmark. Many Stoldavians don't consider themselves Anarian, but see their island as an own continent beside Anaria and Thultannia.

The Taobhdunn Mountains in East Thultannia.
Main article: Thultannia

The island of Thultannia is the second largest in Anaria after Stoldavia and is located in the north of the continent. The island is bordered in the north by the Thuaid Sea, north of which lies the continent of Jørveh; in the north-east by the Zengten Channel, which separates Halland from Aedeland on Stoldavia; in the east by the Narrow Sea and the Aeylish Sea, which separates Thultannia from the Cheltic Isles; in the south-east by The Soll and the Hattaro Straits, which separate Thultannia from Anaria Major; in the south proper by the East and West Medio Seas; in the south-west by the Western Strait, which separates the island from Anaria Minor; and in the west by the Sinian Sea.

Thultannia is mostly known for its temperate and alpine landscapes, with large mountain ranges dominating West and East Thultannia. The Brinor Mountains in the west and the Taobhdunns in the east are the primary mountain ranges, although much of the rest of the subcontinent is hilly. The island's temperature varies considerably from relatively warm on the southern coast, which has a Median climate and can average between 15 to 17 degrees Celsius, and the northern coast which is considerably colder averaging between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. East Thultannia experiences considerably more rainfall than the west, averaging between 85-100cm a year compared to as little as 50-85cm a year in the west.

The island of Thultannia is home to the nations of Alsair, Halland, and Penryn, and Auresia (the province of Hattaria) on the south-east of the island.

Main article: Rissland
See also: Dhonowlgos
The Rift Valley in central Rissland.

Rissland, known until 7554 as Dhonowlgos (Wolgos Island), is a group of islands in the north-east of Anaria, off the north-east coast of Stoldavia. They are surrounded by the Stormy Sea to the west, the North Sea to the north, and the Stolvic Ocean to the east and south. The islands occupy a total land area of 333,696 km² and are made up of many hundreds of small islands beside the mainland.

The islands of Rissland have a wide variety of topography with plains, a volcanic plain and two mountain ranges dominating the landscape. Rissland is also well known for its considerable volcanic activity. The highest point in Rissland is Mount Whlor at 3,728 metres above sea level. The two mountain ranges that transverse the mainland, is broken by the Rift Valley, a long expanse with considerable geothermal and volcanic activity where the landscape is compromised of hilly volcanoes, barren ash expanses and open lava flows. Most volcanic activity is in the form of open lava flows and volcanic ash columns but rarely are pyroclastic explosions and flows seen. As a consequence of the volcanic activity on the island, as well as significant amounts of annual rainfall, the soil is extremely rich and supports a very fertile landscape. The islands are also characterised by peculiar coasts where cliffs with narrow stony beaches dominate much of the coastline.

Rissland, as it is now known, is home to the nation of Rissland, a Commonhold within the Stolvic Häverist Commonwealth. Prior to 7554 and the Häverist-Wolgos War, the island was home to the Wolgos sub-species, and their nation of Dhonowlgos. Today no Wolgos remain on the island, having evacuated to Altaia and created The Bind.

Ethnic groups

See also: List of ethnic groups

The indigenous people of Anaria comprise eleven main ethnic groupings, with significant variation within those groupings which result in over 100 distinct "peoples of Anaria" being identified by the Anisoran anthropologist Emmanuele D'Arrento.b The eleven main ethnic groups are:

The Wolgos, a subspecies of modern humans, were originally an Anarian indigenous ethnic group, who evolved in Stoldavia. However, during the Häverist-Wolgos War (7544-7548), the Wolgos evacuated Stoldavia and Dhonowlgos and resettled entirely in northern Altaia across the Stolvic Ocean.

Anaria is by far the most populous continent on Gotha, with over 921 million inhabitants as of 7570, as well as the most densely populated. Currently more than 34% of the population of Gotha lives in Anaria. Population is not evenly distributed throughout the continent, with the majority of the population located in the northern half of the continent, particularly in Anaria Major. Southern Anaria Major and Adhem is largely rural, as is central Stoldavia and much of Anaria Minor. Major population centres are located in the Axiom Basin in northern Anaria Major, Western Thultannia, south-eastern Stoldavia, the Cheltic Isles, and the Nesterian Islands.

The most populous country in Anaria is Auresia, with over 75 million people, followed by Errea with over 60 million, and the Anisoran Empire with over 46 million. The total population of the Anarian territories of the Stolvic Häverist Commonwealth, which includes the populations of Helreich, Rissland, and Mörenburg, would make it the second most populated state in Anaria with over 61 million residents, although is not classed as a sovereign state. The most densely populated country is Amberia, with a population of 106.99/km², followed by Auresia with 79.40/km², and Penryn with 75.12/km².

Anaria has a great number of indigenous languages and is home to many language families and language isolates. The languages of Anaria can be divided into three large language families and several other language isolates and smaller families. The principal language groups are: the Dragar languages, derived from Pastanan and Dragaric spread during the 6th millennium under the Dragar Monopoly; the Achlt languages, originating from Stoldavia; and the Malorski-lech languages.

Dragar languages are the most spoken languages by the number of native speakers in Anaria, and are principally spoken in Northern Anaria Major, the southern and central Medio region and the eastern coast of Anaria Minor. Major Dragaric languages include: Anisoran, Ardennian, Auresian, Campian, Juranese, Urdinese, and Vaixellan, as well as the revived ancient language Pastanan. Achlt languages are mostly spoken on Stoldavia, southern and eastern Thultannia, and the Cheltic Isles (as well as in Jørveh). Major Achlt languages include: Aedelish, Cheltic, Hallish, Mörenburger, Stoldish, and Wortsproke. Malorski-lech languages are spoken in central and southern Anaria Major, as well as south-eastern Anaria Minor. Major Malorski-lech languages include: Sjazek, Bojovic, and Gisarran.

Other major language families in Anaria include: the Cydhlig languages, spoken throughout Thultannia, and include Penrish and Islish; the Heyelrem languages, spoken in Anaria Minor, and include Lusavanic and XXX; the Tragonic languages (also called the Xhiskara languages), spoken in Atregona, and include Atregonese and XXX; the Latvaloda languages, spoken in north-eastern Adhem, and includes Ashtemic and XXX; the Shjuhe languages, spoken in central and southern Adhem, and include XXX; the Ostyvog isolate languages, spoken on the Nestorian Isles, and include Turves; the Delphinic languages, spoken in south-western Anaria Minor (as well as north-eastern Tharna), and include XXX; the Kartmaliti languages, spoken in Teratogyneka in the far west of Anaria Minor (although the majority of Kartmaliti speakers live in northern Tharna), and include Parnethi and Tahani; and the Xholdhar isolate language, spoken exclusively on Dhonowlgos Island.

Aschgæt is the largest city in Anaria with a population of over 4.5 million people.

Major cities

Anaria is the most populous continent on Gotha, and is also the most urbanised, with some of the largest cities in the world located there. The four most populous cities in Anaria are Aschgæt (Amberia), Concordia (Errea), Porto Imperiale (Auresia), and Hoffnung (Helreich), each with over 2 million residents. The largest city in Anaria, Aschgæt, is the capital of Amberia and has over 4.5 million residents. Other major cities in Anaria include: Cedelphia, Pena, Orlême, Eilekis, Arrento, Kashghir, Ærilar, Bradeşti, Aberardd, and Östvallen.

Political geography

The Anarian continent is made up of a great many competing powers, political blocs, and alliances, many of which date back to the Pan-Anarian War or even further. The extremely complex geopolitical situation in Anaria today has been significantly influenced by the fifty-year Pan-Anarian War which ravaged much of the continent between 7498 and 7552, although the geopolitical situation in Anaria is an ever evolving nexus of alliances and rivalries.

The most politically significant powers in Anaria are the Anarian Great Powers, a set of the most powerful nations in Anaria, that largely exert significant international influence both within Anaria itself as well as elsewhere, particularly through colonial holdings around Gotha. The Anarian Great Powers that are largely agreed to exert the most international influence, through a combination of military, diplomatic, colonial, economic and cultural power are (in alphabetical order): Aedeland, Amberia, Anisora, Auresia, Errea, and Helreich; with Amberia and Helreich the two most powerful Great Powers. Anarian regional powers, which exert little influence beyond Anaria, also sometimes called "Middle Powers", include: Atregona, Becuvitatia, Halland, Istania, Penryn, and Vittmark.3 In addition to these powers, Anat Tahan exerts significant influence in Western Anaria, particularly Anaria Minor, but is classified as a Tharnan Great Power, rather than Anarian.

The most common form of government in Anaria is monarchy, with ten nations currently retaining some form of monarchical government (Auresia, Becuvitatia, and Varennes having absolute monarchies; and Anisora, Atregona, Alsair, Halland, Hradista-Bojov, United Royal Provinces, and Vittmark having constitutional monarchies). Five nations are Republics (Aedeland, Amberia, Errea, Istania, and Penryn), although both Amberia and Errea retain elements of monarchical government, each electing a monarch alongside their other republican insitutions, and could thereby be technically classed as elective constitutional monarchies, but self-identify as republics. A further three nations, Helreich, Mörenburg, and Rissland, all members of the Stolvic Häverist Commonwealth, are Häverist nations, which combines elements of republican, technocratic, and autocratic government.

List of states and territories

The lists below include all known sovereign states and territories that fall entirely or partially in Anaria in a political or geographic sense. All states and territories listed lie entirely within the continental boundaries of Anaria, with the exception of the Tahani province of Eastern Gadavides, which lies at the western most point of the continent along the Straits of Afti in western Anaria Minor, with Western Gadavides and the vast majority of Tahani territory located in neigbouring Tharna.

In addition to the sovereign states, there are a number of dependencies, dominions, protectorates, and other forms of overseas territories within Anaria, all with various levels of autonomy. As of 7580, there are two overseas territories and two dominions, with the largest of which by far being the Principality of Achilleio, a dominion and client state of the Aldsegian Empire.

As a continent, the economy of Anaria is currently by far the largest on Gotha, dominating the world economy. The total Anarian economies make up the largest economic zone in the world and represent 59.3% of the world's total GDP, despite only having just over a third of the world's population (35.3%). The vast majority of Gotha's advanced, industrialised economies are located in Anaria, with many of them maintaining expansive overseas colonial empires, which generates significant wealth for the Anarian colonial powers.4

As with most continents, Anaria has a significant variation in wealth among its nations and larger geographic regions. The richest states are located in the north of the continent, with the Adhem subcontinent in the south the poorest region in Anaria. Income disparity is significant in Anaria, with the richest state in terms of GDP per capita being the United Royal Provinces (54.35₲), compared to the poorest Hradista-Bojov (13.70₲). As a whole, Anaria's GDP per capita is 23.05₲.

The majority of Anarian states are capitalist with a market based, monetary economy. However, a number of Anarian nations employ an energy-based system, known as Häverist economics. Rejecting the conventional monetary economies that have dominated Anaria for centuries, Häverist economies favour a regulated supply-and-demand economy based on energy production and consumption. All members of the Stolvic Häverist Commonwealth employ the Häverist system, and the combined economy of the entire Commonwealth (including non-Anarian states) makes it by far the largest single economic area on Gotha.

Below are two lists of the five largest Anarian economies in terms of GDP and GDP per capita respectively.

Religion in Anaria is highly diverse and was the birthplace of many major religions, incuding Dlroch'veldr, The Faith, Orkanan, and Sadarisnism. Anaria has also been the location of a great deal of religiously fuelled conflict, and due to the large variance in faiths and religious beliefs, even within religions themselves, religious tensions are still common throughout the continent. Nevertheless, the religions of Anaria have played a major role in the development of Anarian culture, art, philosophy, law, architecture, and language.

The largest religion in Anaria, and which dominates the northern half of the continent, is Orkanan. The religion is monotheistic and is characterised by its bottom-up structure, meaning there are many subdivisions that often adhere to current or historic national borders. These subdivisions of Orkanan are largely separated into two branches: Interventionist and non-interventionist, highlighting the key doctrinal difference between those who believe in a divine Master Plan and those who do not. Major Orkanan branches include: Mellanhand (considered by many to be the purest modern form of Orkanan); Stellism; Aequalism; Peratolianism; Lazarian Orkanan, and Mennity.

The second most widespread religion is Sadarisnism, which is practised primarily in western Anaria Major and Adhem in the south of the continent. Sardarisnism is a polytheistic religion which venerates four deities that correspond to the four seasons, with practises such as offerings and belief in reincarnation. The third largest religion in Anaria is Izha, practised primarily in Anaria Minor in the west of the continent. An umbrella term for a large number of monotheistic traditions, called 'sects', Izhaic worshippers seek to appease their wrathful God and have historically been an aggressive proselytising religion, bringing it into often violent confrontation with western Orkanan denominations. Major Izhaic sects include the Kökenleri (considered the most orthodox), Alí̱theia, and Norynan sects.

Other religions of Anaria include The Faith, a monotheistic religion practised mainly in Aedeland and Amberia; as well as numerous regional and native isolate religions that have resisted conversion by the major religions throughout the continent. Recent conversion efforts have even produced small pockets of converts to Kamuran Celestialism, particularly in northern Anaria.

The culture of Anaria encompasses the collective and diverse customs and traditions of art, architecture, music, literature, lifestyle, philosophy, politics and religion that have been practised and maintained by the numerous ethnic groups of the continent of Anaria since prehistory. Identification of a specific culture of Anaria or universal cultural elements among the significant diversity that has emanated from multiple cultural spheres is complicated and often considered impossible. Some scholars have attempted to draw parallels between common cultural heritages and practices of various regions and subcontinents in Anaria, such as between the Dragaric, Achlt, and Malorski-lech linguistic regions, although consensus remains allusive.5

As the most populous continent, Anaria is home to several of Gotha's oldest civilisations, that produced many of the great religious systems, some of the oldest myths and extant literature, as well as enduring imperial legacies of great cultural states, such as the Orkanan Realm of Stoldavia, the Dragar Monopoly, and the extant Auresian Empire. Furthermore, in this age of imperialism and colonisation, many Anarian cultures have proven extremely influential around the world due to the close cultural relationship between colonies and motherland. Anarian languages, religions, political systems, fashion, art, and architecture have all consequently spread throughout Gotha to a significant extent. The most influential Anarian cultures today include: Amberian, Anisoran, Auresian, and Hellish cultures.

4 While the topic remains controversial within Anarian economics, a number of economists (including the Anisoran economist Lisabetta Gorgiano) have argued vehemently that colonial administration benefits the colonising power entirely at the expense of the colonised land and people, extracting wealth at an unsustainable rate which coincides with an inevitable contraction of GDP and living standards in the colonised land. This argument is countered by traditional imperialist economists (such as X) who argue that the introduction of advanced modern technology, infrastructure, and other economic activities by the imperial powers, such as railways, manufacturies, and heavy industries, fundamentally benefits the colonised land and in fact grows the local economy as well as modernising it. Nevertheless, since the acquisition and expansion of overseas holdings by Anarian powers during the last century, the Anarian economy has grown significantly.

5 The Anisoran cultural historian R. Emanuele Filomena-Rovena posited a tri-polar definition of Anarian culture, centred around the three main religious regions of Anaria: 'Northern' Anarian culture, dominated by Orkanan (although he largely ignores the distinction between orthodox Orkanan and the Faith practised in Aedeland and Amberia), extending from Anisora in the west to Errea in the east, and from Aedeland in the north to X in the south; 'Southern' Anarian culture, dominated by Sadarisnism, extending from Hradista-Bojov in the east, Becuvitatia in the west all the way to the Simal Strait in the far south; and finally 'Western' Anarian culture, dominated by Izha, confined to Anaria Minor, extending from the Straits of Afti to the borders of the Anisoran Empire. Writing just after the Häverist-Wolgos War in 7553 and the evacuation of the Wolgos to Altaia, Filomena-Rovena nevertheless classified the Wolgos as not only non-Anarian, but also as non-human.
