The Imperial Customs & Excise Administration - in Auresian Amministrazione Doganale e della Accise Imperiale - is the independent branch of the Imperial Curia of the Auresian Empire responsible for the collection of import/export and tariff revenues, protecting the Imperial economy from smuggling and illegal goods, and processing people and goods at ports of entry.

ADAI customs agents maintain a presence at every port, railway station, and aerodrome in the Empire. Offices for taxation and revenue also exist in every major city and in each prefectural capital. The organization is headquartered in Cedelphia. Its Auresian acronym is ADAI.

ADAI was formed from a merger of two previous organizations - the Trade Tariff Service and the Customs Service - in the reorganization of 7500 by order of Dynast Emperor Willem II.

ADAI exists to defend the commerce of the Empire, to enforce the codes for imports and exports, levy and collect tariffs when and where required, and to ensure the safe flow of goods and people within the Empire's territories. Its agents maintain and oversee the points of entry for all international travel, and are responsible for the management of all international travel regulation.

ADAI maintains a reputation for efficiency and strict observation of the Imperial Code. Violations are firmly dealt with, and while agents are courteous and willing to accommodate reasonable requests or limitations, they have no tolerance for people who attempt to play on sympathy or claim ignorance. Such individuals will be reminded - politely, but firmly - that Imperial Law has no provisions for sympathetic interpretation, nor does ignorance of the law excuse the violator.

ADAI has a simplified rank and organizational structure, built upon the individual "stations" - as each ADAI office in each aerodrome, port, and railway station is known. Every station is led by a leading inspector, who is assisted by numerous inspectors and deputy inspectors. These are the personnel who monitor traffic both incoming and outgoing, and inspect parcels, cases, and mail whenever and wherever they feel necessary to do so. All stations within a district are coordinated by a senior inspector and their staff. They, in turn, answer to a chief inspector and their staff who coordinate all ADAI operations within a prefecture of the Empire. At its pinnacle, ADAI is overseen by the Director-General of Customs & Excise.

Imperial law is on the side of ADAI in difficult situations, and acrimonious travelers are handled with patient courtesy but also with firm discipline. Unusual or inappropriate behavior and aggressiveness are not tolerated, and ADAI personnel are authorized to detain individuals and seize luggage and/or parcels as required. Anyone who is found to be in the process of committing a crime is detained by ADAI and turned over to the authority of the either the prefectural police force or the Ministry Police, as required.

ADAI consists of the following primary subordinate agencies -

  • Imperial Border Force - Forza di Frontiera Imperiale - responsible for border security, monitoring aerodromes, ports, and rail stations.
  • Imperial Immigrations Enforcement Service - Servizio di Applicazione Imperiale per l'Immigrazione' - is the agency responsible for monitoring all foreign nationals in the Empire on permits or other special status grants, and handling detention and removal of those who violate the terms of said special grants.
  • Imperial Revenue Surveillance Service - Servizio di Sorveglianza delle Entrate Imperiale - responsible for the investigation of cases involving contraband, illegal drugs, financial evasion and violations, money laundering, and surveillance for police purposes in financial matters.
