Porto Imperiale - also known as Port Imperial and nicknamed Impport - is a major city and metropolitan area of Auresia. Located on the northeastern shores of Barceto Prefecture, just ten miles south of the Eastern Gates of the Hattaro Straits, the city is a prosperous trade center. The city is home to the Imperial Maritime Institute, the Imperial Exchange and is home to one of the single largest ports in the world. It is older than Cedelphia and is the greatest nexus of Auresian economic activity and one of the most prominent economic centers in the world. It is also one of the largest metropoli in the world.

Porto Imperiale is known by the nicknames "City That Never Sleeps", "City of Ships" and the "City of the Titan", for the great statue that stands at the north entrance to the Inner Harbour.

History

Pre-Empire

Prior to its becoming a port city at the heart of the new Empire, Porto Imperiale was known as Solanos Mor and was the largest port and capital city of the kingdom of Portoga. At the time, the city had around 160,000 people living in it, and it was a busy nexus of activity for shipping, commerce, trade and exchange. The Grand Bazaar in the city was said to be the one place you could trade for virtually any commodity in the world just by visiting Anaria.

Imperial Era

When the Empire was formed, the capital moved to Cedelphia and the former capital cities of the Three Kingdoms lost that status. Each one became a major city within the new Empire, albeit under new names and with a different place within the realm. Solanos Mor was named Porto Imperiale - a.k.a. Port Imperial - by a vote of the Council and has remained as such ever since. Porto Imperiale played a major role in the Pan-Anarian War, being the side of several decades of urban guerrilla warfare. It is estimated that nearly 200,000 Auresians died over the course of a nearly thirty-year period dislodging the forces of Helreich from the city, though Auresia did take considerable heart in the fact that the Titan statue survived.

As of current date, the Porto Imperiale Metropolitan Area contained an additional 6.4 million.

Sites of Interest

Porto Imperiale is a testament to Auresian business acumen, the prosperity of a free market, and the energy of a people. It is a sprawling metropolis of architecture, events, history and opportunity. It is also a popular stop for foreign tourists who seek to browse high-brow shops and markets, or find any of a number of exotic foods or goods.

Government

Executive

Porto Imperiale, as a major city, is governed by a lord mayor. This individual is elected every five years and is limited to two terms. This individual is known informally as the "first citizen" (primo cittadino) of the city.

Legislative

The Lord Mayor is assisted in governance of Porto Imperiale by a Municipal Council ( Consiglio Municipale) of eighteen men and women, one per district, who represent those districts and also specialize in oversight of the areas of city oversight necessary for maintenance of the metropolis and its services.

Judicial

The city is part of the Imperial Courts System.

Services

Utilities

As the largest city in the Empire, the metropolis built above the Porto Imperiale Works is supported by a vast network of maintenance corridors, lines for electricity, water, heat and gas as well as the storage and workshops needed to maintain the upkeep of same. Also underneath the waterside areas are extensive drainage tunnels, pumps and diversions designed to keep the city as safe as possible against flooding.

Transportation

Transportation through Porto Imperiale's many districts is done by vehicle, horse and buggy, trolley car and bicycle. For longer range travel, the Mezenti Skyport provides air travel to every major city in the Empire and many points beyond. Also, the extensive rail yard at Central Imperial Station handles thousands of travelers every day and every type of cargo imaginable. The city is also home to one of the oldest metro systems in Auresia and all of Anaria.

Defenses

As the exterior "gate" of the Hattaro, Porto Imperiale falls into the territorial responsibilities of the Second Order of the Sovereign Armed Forces and can have the full strength of that force come to its defence on short notice. The city's port, metro and rail stations are safeguarded by the Transit Militia. Task Forces I and II of the II Fleet of the Imperial Auresian Navy berths at the Porto Imperiale Naval Yard.

The Grand Fortress, long a bastion of Auresian dominance over the Hattaro, was badly damaged by the Hellish invasion during the Pan-Anarian War, targeted for its being a critical link in Imperial defense of the straits. After their conquest of the city, the Hellish used it as a base of operations. Retaking it was a top priority, and when the city was finally retaken, the Fortress was repaired and upgraded extensively. It has been modernized with extensive anti-aircraft defenses to complement its heavier cannons.
