The Siege Engineering Service is a highly specialized branch of the Imperial Auresian Armed Forces dedicated to a variety of construction and demolition tasks under combat conditions.

At present, the SES task listings include constructing and breaching trenches, tank traps and other fortifications, bunker construction, bridge and road construction or destruction, laying or clearing land mines, and other physical work in the battlefield. Particularly, a siege engineer's main goals involve facilitating movement and support of friendly forces while impeding that of the enemy.

The Siege Engineering Service is under the direction of an officer of the rank of general. It has personnel and facilities at each Fort, Fleet Station and Sky Station, and a group of its personnel also maintain laboratories at Mount Olivia Research & Development Centre.

Early History

The SES is one of the world's oldest such units. It is a combat technique and tactical mindset adopted by the early emperors and later put to good use in several conflicts throughout the Empire's history, most especially during colonial troubles and the Pan-Anarian War. Over the years, the SES has been a pioneering force in the development of new techniques, tactics and tools in the "art of siege warfare", and the Imperial War Museum in Cedelphia has an extensive wing dedicated to the history of warfare in the fields of siege and artillery. Many innovations brought about by the SES are displayed there.

Present Day

Imperial siege engineers use practices and techniques of camouflage, reconnaissance, communication methods and enhancement of survival by other troops. Siege engineering also includes construction of roads, bridges, field fortifications, obstacles and the construction and running of water points. In these roles, siege engineers use a wide variety of hand and power tools. They are also responsible for construction rigging, the use of explosives, and carrying out demolitions, camouflage erection, field fortification construction, obstacle clearance, and obstacle construction, assault of fortifications, bridge erection, use of assault boats in water obstacle crossings, expedient road and helipad construction, general construction, route reconnaissance and road reconnaissance, and erecting field defensive points and comms facilities. Siege engineers build and run water distribution points, carrying out water filtration - and decontamination when necessary - and storage prior to distribution.

All these role activities and technologies are divided into several areas of combat engineering:

  • Building fortifications.
  • Building outposts.
  • Building fences.
  • Defense from chemical weapon threats, coordinated w/ the CWS.

Research & Development

Based out of Mount Olivia, the R&D unit of SES is responsible for development of new tactics, techniques, tools and methods. It operates under the general aegis of the War Research Service.

The handling of ordnance of all varieties for both removal and emplacement is handled via the troops of Ordnance Section. They are commonly referred to by the military abbreviation EOH - Explosive Ordnance Handling.

Teams of siege engineers operating in construction and destruction are handled via this section. They will raise or destroy fortifications, facilities, support structures and infrastructure as necessary.
