Willem Darvos Rex Lord Alexandros (officially Willem II or Willem R & I) was Emperor of Auresia from 27 February 7493 until his death 32 years later on 18 January 7525. Emshandar III, his youngest son, succeeded him to the Golden Lion Throne. He was the Sixty-Third Dynast Sovereign and a member of the VI Dynasty.

While a soft-spoken man, Willem built a reputation for himself as a firm and steady leader. He respected the advice of his ministers and proconsuls and used their skills and strengths to the Empire's advantage at all opportunities. He was one of the driving forces behind the formation of the Alliance during the PAW.

Reign

It was during the reign of the Emperor Willem that the Pan-Anarian War ignited and would ravage the continent for the next half-century. His closure of the Hattaro Straits to Hellish oil ships was one of the initial sparks that eventually broke out into full-scale war. Though he was wary to the loss of Tahani oil, the Emperor sided with his ministers in the opinion that even if the Empire must suffer said loss, the Hellish would be losing it, as well. He would lament the ravages of the Medio Campaign, but would never deny his complicity in the underestimation of Hellish capabilities, nor would he allow any to challenge his determination to overcome those the Empire opposed.

On the domestic front during the war, Emperor Willem did not curtail his responsibilities as leader of the nation for the war, and regularly visited his troops, the hospitals and strongholds maintaining them, and the factories and mills supporting them. He and his wife both were welcome sights and provided a boost to morale during tense days.

During a visit to XXXX during the second decade of the war, Willem was the victim of an attempted assassination by a XXXX partisan who managed to get close enough to the Emperor to attempt several shots at him. While the Emperor himself was not struck by the bullets, two Tentenal were hit and one was killed as they moved to cover His Majesty from the attack. The partisan was cut down by Tentenal bullets as he attempted to flee the scene.

Private Life

Emperor Willem was married from 11 March 7473 to the Empress Marona, who preceded him in death on her passing in 7522 at the age of 69 after suffering first a heart attack and then a stroke. Their 49-year marriage bore four children.

It is said that the death of Empress Marona weighed heavily on Willem. Their long marriage had been one filled with a deep abiding love and affection for one another, and he often times called her "his softer side". While he was known for his grandfatherly charm and warmth, he maintained a cool professionalism in all official business and did not like becoming too familiar without fair efforts towards a more open dialogue or a more trusting relationship. After her passing, his work in leading the war efforts and helping to teach and raise his grandchildren became his focus.

Approximately three days before his death, Willem suffered a stroke that left him with limited mobility. His eldest child, Princess Imperial Zarona, was brought to tears by seeing her fiercely independent father helpless and confined to his bed. Her recollection of his last days in her memoirs would become one of the poignant depictions of the dignity the ailing lord had even as he breathed his last. By that point, all that could be done was to pray for him, and the Imperial Family gathered quietly. He died in the early morning hours, with his last reported words being "Oh...look at that...the sun is coming up."

Per his instructions, Willem's remains were laid in state in Celestial Basilica for two days. National mourning was limited to personal remembrances, as Willem did not want the nation distracting itself from the war, having said "Saving the Empire is far more important than mourning me."

Daguerreotype of Emperor Willem dated 7520.
